Celebrate the Move to Senior Living

Making the move to a senior living community is a big achievement that deserves to be celebrated! After all the planning, research and hard work, you are finally ready to move onto the next big chapter in your life.

At this point in the process, you’ve waved goodbye to the movers and begun to unpack in your new home. The adventure starts from day one, so don’t wait to jump in! Many independent living communities have orientation programs in place to help you adjust to your new routine and space. Solstice Senior Living’s New Resident Orientation program makes sure you take a moment to celebrate your new achievement while getting to know associates and residents.

Here are a few things you can expect once you arrive:

  • A favorite meal in the dining room
  • Coffee and pastries with a member of the Solstice team
  • A fun activity or game night with your neighbors
  • A mini photoshoot to share first memories in your new home with your friends and family

We know this transition comes with its challenges, though. Moving to a new place can be a little intimidating, especially when you’re not completely used to the layout or have gotten into a regular routine. That is totally normal and ok. During that first week, here are some tips to make the transition easier and make your new community feel like home.

  • Make sure you know when and where to pick up your mail delivery.
  • Confirm there are no maintenance issues, and if your community includes a cable service, confirm that it’s in working order.
  • Learn whom you can contact if you’re experiencing issues with your apartment or have topics you’d like discussed with leadership.
  • Find out if your community has resident-led committees or a Resident Council and see when those meetings take place. Get involved and make your voice heard!
  • See if there are regular fireside chats or monthly coffees available with the Executive Director.
  • Ask if there are regular meetings with the Culinary Director to provide feedback as a group.
  • Take a look at the transportation schedule, so you can plan your errands and medical appointments. Also keep an eye out for upcoming outings you may want to join!
  • From here, you get to continue enjoying the friendships you’ll make and the life you’ve built.

After the first couple of days, you might have met several of your neighbors. Take advantage of every opportunity to say hello. You’ll find that they’re your best source of information as you get settled in. Need some conversation starters? Here are some questions to ask to learn more about your community and who you share it with:

  • How long have you been a part of this community?
  • What is your favorite meal in the dining room?
  • How long have you been a part of this community?
  • What is your favorite meal in the dining room?
  • What is your favorite way to spend a Saturday?
  • Where are you from?
  • Do you have family in the area?
  • What is your favorite family tradition?
  • What is your favorite event or excursion you have attended?
  • What are some of your hobbies?
  • Do you have any favorite restaurants or shops nearby?
  • What clubs or committees are you involved in?
  • What is your favorite social activity?
  • What is a favorite memory of your time here?

Solstice and many other independent living communities plan daily activities for their residents to give everyone an opportunity to get to know each other and have a good time. Be sure to check the activity calendar regularly, so you never miss out on the fun! Your life at a senior living community is all about you.
