Adventure Never Gets Old: Learn How Senior Travel Unleashes the Joy of Exploration

Summer is finally here, which means it is time to embark on adventures and check some items off your bucket list. Traveling allows seniors to step outside of their comfort zones and experience new things. No matter if you choose to travel independently or bring along your family and friends, there are so many places to explore near and far where you can create memories that will last a lifetime.

Recent studies have shown that seniors who travel become more open-minded and are less likely to experience depression. Traveling also keeps seniors active and can increase their self-confidence.

Don’t let the stress of planning and packing stop you from going somewhere new! Below we have listed some of our best recommendations for senior travel.

For the Nature Lover
National parks are one of the best ways to explore the great outdoors. Whether you’re at Zion, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains or the Grand Tetons, you will get a front-row seat to some of the most unique forestry and wildlife in America. Enjoy an adventurous hike, an informational park ranger-led walk along the trails, or a quiet and peaceful drive through the park.

For the Beach Bum
It’s time to set sail and cruise to the tropical vacation of your dreams! Did you know that almost every major cruise line has accommodations in place so that every kind of passenger on board can enjoy their voyage? Cruises allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy the breathtaking sights of the ocean while also giving you options of excursions to choose from. They are best for those looking for a time to kick back and relax.

For the Adventure Seeker
Alaska is a destination that will make you feel as though you’ve left the country without actually having to. Be transported to a whole new world of whale watching, bear sightings and glacier tours. At night, bundle up and go watch the Northern Lights with a cup of hot chocolate. This one-of-a-kind trip has a plethora of activities to choose from, whether you want to be active or relax by a warm fire at a cozy lodge.

For the Historian
Charleston, South Carolina, is the epitome of Southern charm; but it is also packed full of history. Start your day off with a historical tour of the city in a horse-drawn carriage to hear the history of when parts of the American Revolution and Civil War took place in Charleston. Visit Fort Sumter and take a tour of the USS Yorktown, and at night take a ghost tour through the old city jails. There are even options for a food tour! Needless to say, you will never be bored in this city and will leave feeling newly educated.

At Solstice, we believe that traveling allows our residents to make new friends and cultivate new memories. Each month, every community provides local outings to shops, restaurants, museums and more to allow our residents to learn more about their area. Residents are not required to attend, but we encourage all of our residents to participate. To learn more about community outings, check out our Vibrant Life® activities program here.
