Spring cleaning is just around the corner! Decluttering is a great way to tidy up your space and simplify your life. Mental health experts also say getting rid of unwanted and unneeded items around your home is energizing and uplifting.
As you think about starting the organization process to keep your mind and home fresh, be sure to keep these spring cleaning tips in mind.
Open Your Room to the Sun
Being outside in the sunshine increases your production of vitamin D, helps regulate your melatonin levels resulting in better sleep and improves your mood. To get more sunlight in your room, make a point to open your curtains or blinds during the day or try strategically placing a mirror in your room to reflect the sunlight. If you cannot be near a window, try some bright lighting with LED, halogen or fluorescent bulbs!
Manage the Paper Trail
Paper accounts for a lot of the clutter in our lives. It’s important to take some time every few months to go through and sort through paper clutter to remove anything you might not need anymore. Creating a filing system for bills, cards, medical records and other items will keep everything clearly organized to remove added stress.
The 12-Month Rule
You may be surprised at how much “stuff” has accumulated the longer you stay in one place. It’s always a good idea to go through your closets and drawers to remove any items that are no longer useful and are taking up space. Apply the 12-month rule to each item: If you haven’t worn or used it in the last year, ask yourself if you really need it.
Downsize Holiday Decorations
It’s so easy to collect holiday decorations throughout the years. We often purchase new without getting rid of the old decorations that we don’t use anymore. If you have decorations you didn’t use this year, pack them up to donate!
